Is your hairstyle stuck in the 90’s?

Here’s a good idea for seeing if your hairstyle is stuck in the 90’s!

Lauren Branchini, at emoryworldonline.com, tells the story of watching home videos over Thanksgiving with her family and how much, to her surprise, hairstyles have changed. She began to realize how dated some hairstyles had become in just a short amount of time.

So reading this, it occurred to me, what a good opportunity viewing past Holiday videos can be for capturing the truth to how long you’ve been wearing that same hairstyle. It’s easier to see the advantage of a hairstyle update for another family member, rather than yourself however….all goes back to my philosophy that it’s hard to see ourselves objectively.

So why not break out the videos and help each other out. I would recommend this to all of my graduates and readers. If there is little difference in your hairstyle you would be a good candidate for a hairstyle makeover. The rest of the article has some good advice as well, its worth a read.

OK, call me crazy, but I’ve always sort of been under the impression that hairstyles don’t really change all that much. Sure, we all know what that out-of-control ’80s style with the hairsprayed wall of bangs looks like, but, I mean, hair is hair, right?

Well, I had a wake-up call over Thanksgiving break in the form of our home videos from the early ’90s. I barely recognized my mom, who today sports sleek shoulder-length hair, but way back when had a sort of pouffy Hilary Clinton circa 1992 look going on. Had a sort of pouffy Hilary Clinton circa 1992 look going onMy dad, I’m terribly embarrassed to say, was definitely rocking a mullet. But before you judge me for my family’s egregious hair mishaps, I challenge all of you to take a look in your family archives. What you find will undoubtedly shock and appall you.

But there is a lesson we can all learn from our parent’s past bad-hair transgressions, and that is that one way to keep your look modern, even trendy, is to have the right haircut.

In terms of current hair trends, there is no better place to look than your favorite models and celebrities. The most popular hairstyle today, at least for women, is that sort of soft, messy, wavy look, or what I like to call “Victoria’s Secret hair.” Long gone are the days of excessive hairspray or pin-straight tresses — trendy haircuts today are all about volume, body and movement. To get that kind of messily glamorous ’do, ask your hairdresser to use a razor to cut layers into your hair, more layers means more volume.

    1. Hi,
I’m the author of the article “The Right Haircut is the Perfect Accessory” that you included in this article. This is kind of a shot in the dark, but I was wondering if you have any advice for finding future employment in magazine writing or publications. I’m currently a sophomore in college and I’m trying to get a summer internship or job that will allow me to continue writing.
      Thanks so much!
      Lauren
