New Tips To Prevent . . . Fading Red Hair Color!

If you color your hair any shade of red, you are more than likely on the lookout for any help you can get to maintain the rich, beautiful red hair color you have when you leave the salon.

“fading by the time
she gets to the car”

The problem of fading red hair colors is a big one, but here is one of the best ideas I’ve read lately in how to combat this prevalent problem.

The editor in chief of American Salon magazine, Marianne Dougherty, asks Patrick McIvor, of Patrick McIvor Color Studio in Bethlehem, Pa. how he keeps red hair colors from fading, he answers;

If you make a client the shade of red she actually wants to be, her hair color is already fading by the time she gets to the car. We should be making our clients redder than they want to be, but so they don’t scream when they look in the mirror, apply a brown glaze at the shampoo bowl. The glaze will wash out in a few days, and by that time, the color will have faded a bit so she’ll see the shade she wanted in the first place.

,,

Mention this idea to your colorist to try if you are having this problem. I would caution you about trying this at home. Key to the success of this method will be choosing the right shade of red and brown and knowing the right length of time to leave the glaze on your hair.

The porosity of your hair will determine the right timing. You could easily end up with dried out hair that is much darker than you wanted. So my advice . . . leave it to the professionals.

Other hair color saving remedies:

  • Use a gentle shampoo & conditioner for color treated hair

  • Wear a hat or scarf in the sun

  • Easy on heat styling

  • Use a thermal protector before heat styling

  • Use a leave-in conditioner at the beach or pool

  • Try a color enhancing conditioner on regrowth

  • Use a color clarifying shampoo when needed and follow with deep condition
