Crystal Bowersox from American Idol adds interest to dreadlock extensions!

Dreadlock Extensions are starting to fly off the shelves and I think our American Idol, Crystal Bowersox may have brought some added attention to the hairstyle. Dreadlocks have been showing up more and more in the past few years with cultures like, new age, gothic and the revisited hippie culture.“Crystal Bowersox of American Idol Give Momentum to Dreadlock Extensions”Can’t say that the look is for me but I’ve come to appreciate dreadlocks more than I ever would have believed . . . say back 20 years ago or so. I think my change of heart has come about with all the cute braids, ponytails, pigtails, updos and chignons that are made from dreads and dreadlock extensions.

There are loads of different styles of dreadlocks, free-form, palm rolled, 2 strand twists and manual locking method, who knows what else. I know very little about the process but I think it is only as limited as the imagination goes.

The Hairpolice, a local Minneapolis Salon, created dreadlock perms in 1986, which they say is the best way to start ‘natural’ dreadlocks. Hairpolice uses a comb and their hands to create dread shapes in the hair, then permanently ‘perms’ them in with a chemical solution. A full head dread perm is $275 and they will continue to grow into dreads. They say the extensions are simple maintenance with salon visits needed every 2-4 months on the dreadlocks.

Dreadlock extensions are the quickest, easiest way to dip your toe in the Rastafarian waters. It will also save you lots of wear and tear on your hair by going with dreadlock extensions. You can start with a partial set of extensions to try it out and to keep the cost down. You may pay about $100.00 for 20 dreadlock extensions and possibly up to $500.00 for a full head of dreadlock extensions. But you can also consider starting with as few as 3 or 4 dreadlock extensions to test the waters.

You can buy dreadlock extensions in a variety of colors at bonanzle.com if you have a talented person who can put them in for you. Or, you might ask your hair salon if you can bring in your own dreadlock extensions and have them put them in for you.

Here is a video that shows the process of putting in dreadlock extensions;
