The long prom hair styles of not so long ago was a completely different story than today. Lucky you! I have memories of way too much time spent at the hair salon getting shampooed followed by a roller set that was so tight, it left you with a headache and a face lift at the same time. You then sat under the hair dryer till your ears and face turned red. Next came a violent comb-out, in a sort of a rip and tear kind of way.

After that came the main prom hair styling technique of the day, RATTING! These hairdressers knew how to RAT, that is, backcombing or teasing, taken to a violent extreme which made your hair like a rat’s nest and stay put for months. Some-how after lots of combing over, spraying, twisting and pinning, voila . . . the masterpiece . . . love-locks.

We all had prom hairstyles, we all looked the same and basically we all hated prom hair styles. Tears, were shed by many as they left the salon that hopeful day, feeling older than dirt. And, that’s just what you asked the hairdresser NOT to do! “Please DON”T make me look old.

Good news for you gals, prom hairstyles for long hair have evolved eons since that time. If you’re talented with hair styling techniques you may be able to recreate some of these casual prom hairstyles at home. But, don’t leave it to chance! Practice and if not you’re happy, make that appointment with a professional hairdresser. There are subtleties in making a casual Prom updo look casual and still have it hold all day and through prom night and make you shine.

Eye Brow Care is Overlooked by Too Many of Us

“Eye Brows are Often Overlooked”I noticed it has been quite a while since we have done our last article on eye brow care. When I saw the good news that Chanel is bringing back it’s great product Chanel Prefect Brows, I jumped at the chance to write about it.

Eye brow color is often overlooked as a beauty routine. Getting just the right color to accent your hair color and skin tone is a trick that can really make your look complete. With this product you can use the brush to shape and contour your eye brows. I often see women using eyshadow will work in a pinch, but the Chanel Prefect Brows product will not rub off quite as easily and gives you a more natural look.

Chanel Perfect Brows comes with a brush, 3 color shades (blonde, brown and black) and a tweezer in a nicely styled square compact with a magnifying mirror. Priced at $69.95 a bit pricey in my opinion, but let’s face good products are usually worth it.

Finally, here at least, it’s starting to look like we will have a spring and summer after all. Whew!

I’m a big fan of hats and summertime is about my favorite time of year to wear them.  I like them in all shapes and colors, casual, funky and dressy . . . they all work for me. In summer, I especially like the casual hats that hide icky-hair care days and add a little attitude at the same time.

Came across Jen Aniston’s picture today and thought posting it might get some of you gals thinking about what to do about summer hair care protection your precious locks when out sunning this summer. If you color, high light, lowlight, glaze, relax or indulge in any hair care chemical treatment, it will behoove you to cover up when you are out for extended hours in the heat of the sun. Of course you’ve heard it all before.

So next time your out on a fashion spree, visiting some of your favorite haunts, try on some funky hats. It helps to have a girlfriend along for feedback, it’s hard to be objective about hats.

Summertime is about here and let’s face it, who wants to spend time puttsing with their hair? I mean really wouldn’t you rather be at the beach, boating, biking, hiking, golfing, anything but having a wrestling match with your hair style? Life is too short, now is the time to be doing . . . and that doesn’t mean your hair.

Ok, I admit we need some doing in styling our hair, but this is a good time for changing your look and easing up on your regular routine. Hair styles this time of year should reflect the mood . . . casual, like the lazy, hazy, crazy days of summer.

Rihanna’s is fearless when it comes to changing hair styles. Her hairdresser, Ursula Stephen says, “Rihanna’s addiction is changing her hair style.” And, don’t you love her for it? She’s an example to us all that change can be a good thing, and not as painful as the delusional self might have you believe. Changing your hair style keeps you from falling into the rut of “dating” yourself. Just think how much time Rihanna will save in her morning and evening routine with this short hair style this summer . . . and  she looks like a doll!

The hair is cut super short at the nape getting fuller above the occipital. The top has full layers that are razored and point cut for a dramatic fringe effect.  For an all-out glam look at the NRJ 2008 Music Awards she simply uses a flat-iron creating lift at the crown and accentuates her pointed, side swept, emo hair style bangs. Finish by misting with spray gloss. (Don’t worry that the fringe is always in your eyes, it can be styled to the side and out of the eyes).

The old adage “Life is short,” seems especially true of summertime. Before we know it, its gone! If you’ve been considering a hair style change, now is a good time to think short hair styles . . . get to the beach and kick back!
