Touch up Hair Color

Hair Color Touch Up

You know you need a touch up when . . .

It’s easy to let your hair color go to long and between touch ups, the same way we all occasionally go to long between trims. For some guidance, we spoke to Uliana of Uliana’s Hair Studio in New York city, who offered these signs that it’s time to hit the bottle of hair color:

  • You have more than an inch of regrowth.

  • You start wearing a headband.

  • You don’t want someone taller than you looking down at your head.

  • Your hair begins to look dull. “after awhile, oxidation takes place, which causes color to lose some of its depth and warmth. Reds especially aren’t as as bright,” explains Uliana. “most of us need a touch up every seven weeks to keep hair color looking fresh.”

  • If you have highlights in your hair, you can go longer between touch ups since you have your natural hair color incorporated in them, which means roots won’t be as noticeable. The amount of time you can wait depends on how light you’ve gone.

  • In the summer, women with lighter hair color hues in their hair will not need touch ups as often because the sun tends to lighten their locks. “the sun also adds color to your complexion,” Uliana points out “in the winter, we tend to look gray. Hair color brightens up your whole face . . . that, and lipstick!”
