When Jessica Alba graced the red carpet at the Oscars, we were as mesmerized by her hair as by her dress.

“It’s a very feminine hairstyle. You can make it formal or be more casual with it,” says Barbara Bezik, hairstylist at Aloosions Salon & Spa in Scottsdale.

Bezik takes us through the steps to get Alba’s red-carpet updo with Aloosions receptionist and makeup artist Lindsey Marlais, 20, of Scottsdale, as the model.

1. Make curls.

Start with dry hair. Take one-inch sections of hair, spray with a firm-hold, non-aerosol spray and use a curling iron. Curls don’t need to be tight or perfectCurls don’t need to be tight or perfect, Bezik says. Start in the front and curl toward the back of the head.

2. Pin sections.

Start from the back of the head, skipping the sides. Take a small section of hair, no more than two inches, and place a one-inch bobby pin through the hair about five inches from the crown. Twist the hair and push the bobby pin down into the scalp. Then loop the rest of the strand and use a half-inch bobby pin to fasten to the scalp.

3. Knot sides.

Separate each side into two pieces and loosely knot each section twice. Pin the ends underneath at the back of the head.
