Shear Genius Episode 2

Shear Genius Short Cut Challenge

.
Charlie wins the “Short Cut Challenge” with a Mia Farrow look alike!
This was the far better of the two challenges in this weeks Shear Genius episode for two reasons. First, a hair stylist needs a strong knowledge of hair types in order to correctly identify how the hair will respond when taking off as much length as they needed to with these models. And second, this was a great challenge of the hair stylist artistic sense to create a hair style that best enhanced their clients face shape. When this amount of hair is cut off, it changes the persons looks dramatically!
Bringing Tabatha in as a judge lifted a bit of ire in the group wouldn’t you say? She won’t be given any awards for tact but, I do think she raised a strong reaction out of the viewers as well as the contestants and that alone brings more eyeballs to the show.

Gail’s choice of style — not good — will tee-pee out when hot and humid
I thought Tabatha, being true to her nature, was unreasonably harsh on some like, Nekisa. But I agreed with her totally on the above hairstyle that Gail created. Tabatha asked her what she thought would happen to this hair when it get’s hot and humid out . . . and my answer would be the same . . . it will stick out. I would best describe it, that it will have a tee-pee effect.

Clients rounded facial features are emphasized with this cut
Tabatha was also right in my opinion, in questioning Paolo on his choice of this haircut for his client. Her face is round and he gave her a hairstyle that emphasizes it’s roundness. The back of the hair should have been wedged up higher to de-emphasize fullness in the face.
The Long Hairstyle Challenge—”The Real Housewives of Orange County”
I’ve never seen the show, “The Real Housewives of Orange County,” but the challenge was going to be a tough one. Women with strong egos, attached to their long hair, who won’t let a hair stylist cut much were there to be changed. The challenge . . . To create a new haircut or hairstyle that shows the stylists vision and meets the client’s expectations.

Charlie wins this challenge
Charlie converts his client to a younger look that suits her “rocker” style. I liked his transformation and agreed with Tabatha again that the bangs should be a tad shorter to show her eyes.

The loser; Parker get’s the boot with this cut
The judges rule the color too dark for her age, needed softening. I think he would have done well with the time he had to highlight around the face. The cut is also too severe for her features.
My favorites in this competition;
My favorite was Charlie”s above rocker hairstyle. He created a great look for her with small changes! She looks younger and much more fun! Can’t you just tell she feels better with this cut too? My second choice is Dee’s recreation below. She had to create a bond of trust with her client who then allowed her to make this updated transformation of cut and color. I think this was the most hair that any of these women allowed to be taken off.

One of my favorites
So, I had a great trip with the family down the Mississippi in a houseboat this long 4th of July weekend. I am just catching up now with writing. Summer’s here are too short, so I’m making no apologies on this piece getting out a bit later than anticipated. My next weeks post on Shear Genius however, will be out sooner.
