Shear Genius Challenge #3-Style Long Hair and Incorporate At Least One Accessory

If you were disappointed with many of the results that came out of this challenge, you need to understand the difficulty of working with this much hair! I loved the stylist who kept apologizing as she used her foot to help separate sections of her clients hair. That hair was 68 inches . . . that’s close to six feet long!

This years contestants are quite a bit more seasoned than the first seasons hair stylists. The top two favorites in this challenge have 20 years and 18 years experience in the business. But as it was, Matthew with 20 years experience, wins this challenge but ends up getting the boot at the end of the day. (Don’t think anyone wanted to hear anything more on how he feels about his wife . . . am I wrong here??)

Matthew wins this challenge with weaving pearls throughout the updo.

I thought Matthew did good with pearls woven throughout cascading long hair curls.  They showed him rolling her hair in hot rollers, and I was impressed on how neat he kept it all. He looked liked he kept it together and was in control of where he was going at all times with all that hair . . . important in this industry.

Charlie takes second. How did they figure?

I didn’t think Charlie deserved second place with this unattractive updo hairstyle. I thought the tiara-prom looking updo was not very interesting and looked like he lost his focus with the curls he put on top. So even as a prom updo hairstyle I don’t think it rated much merit. Remember he also trains hair stylists on the how-tos of updos with 20 years experience.

Daniel would be my second choice winner

My choice for second place would have been Daniel. This picture doesn’t do it justice, but he created an interesting silhouette on her and the top was nicely done. He also had pearls in this updo, but they were hidden too deep for the judges.

What Not to Do

What were you thinking girl? She admits she lost it. She lost any picture she had of where she wanted to go with her updo hairstyle when she heard the judge say Charlies style was looking too weddingish. She also said she panicked and she’s not good under pressure. She never got to an accessory. Sorry, but  I don’t think she will last much longer if she can’t put up with the heat! Stylists have a motto they adhere to . . . never let em see you sweat!

Gails Red Carpet Updo was my favorite

The stylists had 2 hours to create hair worthy of the Red Carpet. They were to be judged on creativity, glamour, difficulty and Red Carpet worthiness.

Gail’s creation was #1 in my eyes in all of the categories. The “rope” like effect she created in the back, to match the dress, was brilliant. But mostly, the overall shape and finished look of the up-do hairstyle was contemporary and balanced with the models face shape and dress.

Charlie’s Old Hollywood Glamour hairstyle is modern again!

I would pick Charlies Red Carpet hairstyle as second best. The Old Hollywood glamour look he produced, is hot and new again. I agreed with Kim Vo that the V shape of the hair on the bottom, didn’t finish off well. He did compose quite a work of art with an era appropriate multidimensional hair color and hair style in just 2 hours time. He was rightfully given kudos for his work. For more see my video how-to article of ”Old Hollywood Glamour” hairstyle.

Glenn’s updo pretty, balanced, but a bit dated.

Glenn was my other top favorite. She ranked on top with great curls and the hair swept off the face for one of the more finished hairstyle. But, I think Jaclyn had it right that the look was dated. I used to do this half updo on clients back in the 80’s but unlike the Old Hollywood glamour hairstyles, this hairstyle hasn’t made a comeback yet.
