Short Hair Challenge - Back to School Hair Styles

This episode had two great challenges! Both of these challenges were more practical in showing us more true life situations that hair stylists are up against in the best hair salons.  It’s especially true when compared to last weeks kitchen magicians hair styles, and the doggie do’s and master’s look-alike competition. But that’s entertainment!

1st Short Hair Challenge - Back to School Hair Styles

Each stylist had 30 minutes to makeover their 6 year old ladies into ”kid friendly looks,” that would make good first impressions for their back to school hair styles.

Now, bless their little hearts, but these are not the clients most hair stylists care to work on. They all have fine, fly-away hair that lacks structure to hold styling and therefore needs precision cutting that will fall into place when they move. Not only that, but they are little moving targets with not much patience for sitting in one spot for very long. This is why the stylists were given 30 minutes to do their magic on these little angels.

Daniel wins with “Jaclyn” look alike back to school hair style.

I didn’t agree with the judges choice of Daniel as winner of the back to school hair style challenge. Not that he did a bad job, but I thought they chose him mostly because his client showed more enthusiasm over her new “Jaclyn” hair style, than the others showed over their new do’s.

He did what she asked for, but was that the point? It will never look that way again and it wasn’t really a “kid friendly” look at all. It was hard not to be happy for her though when she was so cute about loving her new do, but it will fall out and be straight within a couple hours. So how good was it?

On the flip side, if you don’t please a child in your chair, they will most likely break down and BAWL! I’m sure no contestant wanted to see that happen at this part of the game.

Charlie got my winning vote for the back to school hair style challenge. His cute double pony-tails with hair wrapped around the bands made his client happy AND was age appropriate And will hold up all the ding dang day! Give him the Gold!!

The Elimination Challenge

This was a good competition. In this go around, each hair stylist was given a competitors family member to makeover. The producers are great with throwing the stylists off guard and they did it once again with this challenge. They were all shocked to see their loved ones show up as part of the show, but when they had to hand them over to a competitor to improve . . . it was another shocking moment for them.

Paolo sent home with this makeover

Paolo may have updated his model, Charlie’s sister, with this flip cut hair style, but the judges ruled his the losing makeover and sent him packing. I agree. There were two important, basic things Paolo didn’t take into consideration; his models hair type and her lifestyle.  Those are basic principals I teach in my online class, Finding the Right Hairstyle for You. This model won’t be going home and replicating this hair style.  If you’ve lived on the planet over 20 years or so, you’ve probably had a similar experience. This is a lesson hair stylists need to pay attention to . . . it’s not about you!

Short Hair Style
Charlie wins with this short hair style

Charlie won with this makeover on Daniel’s Mother. I think he did a good job. This cut opens up her face more and gives some lift with the shorter layering on top. I think it would have looked better with more fullness in back.

Layered Hair style
Daniel won my vote with this hair style

My favorite was Daniels makeover of Nicole’s Mom. It takes ten years off her and is a more updated look. She has a wide rectangular face shape and the straight hair drags her down. Layers soften around the face and shortening it up with a flip cut adds the right balance to her face shape. I do agree with the judges that the color could use more pizazz. Lightening pieces around the face would do much for brightening her whole look.
