Up, up and away By ELIZABETH TAI If you plan on putting up your hair, think “romance” - it’s the flavour of the season. “A lot of clients want something romantic. More definition to the curls and yet everything is structured,” says Mike Lau, art director of Signature Snips Hairdressing. “Now, people go for sleekness, shine and definition. The style is more romantic in a casual way,” he adds. “A few years ago, it was more classical and modern but now ‘up-dos’ are more retro, soft and flowy,” says Philip Chan, the chief artistic director for SizzaMagic Hair Studio. A few years ago, up-dos were more classical and modern, but now they’re more retro, soft and flowy, says Philip Chan. - Pic courtesy of SizzaMagic Hair Studio Think Audrey Hepburn, he suggests. Super straight, rebounded hair is a thing of the past as “so what if it’s messy?” curls and waves make a return curls and waves . Chan and Lau are glad as both love working with wavier, curlier hair. “It’s much easier to put up your hair if it’s permed because texture-wise it’s easier to handle,” says Lau. For one, when straight hair is put up it tends to create a “severe-looking” effect. “Proper make-up, interesting earrings and an attractive neckline could soften things up,” he continues. Those with frizzy hair who plan to put up their hair on their own will face quite a challenge because, as Lau puts it, “Frizzy hair tends to go which ever way they want.” And they need not straighten their hair as Lau believes there can be innovative ways to put up frizzy hair. He advises: “If you have a round face, put your hair higher on your head to elongate your face. If you have a square face, soften your look with curls at the side of your face. If you have an oval-shaped face, you’re blessed, as most hairstyles tend to go well with the shape.” Adding sparkling hairpins or other hair ornaments to your up-do is fine but don’t go overboard. Four to five years ago, people went to town with them but now “less is more”, says Chan. However, both say that it is difficult to pin down a specific up-do style as it depends on the personality of the client or the function she’s attending. |
