Hair Cloning to Remedy Hair Loss

Recently, a student in my online class, Finding the Right Hairstyle for You! asked the question; what’s new in the area of hair loss remedies? Will anything take the place of hair transplantation?

The most promising research getting all the buzz today is called hair cloning, or more accurately stated hair multiplication. Many medical professionals seem to believe that it has a likelihood of success possibly within the next couple of years.

With so many quack remedies in the area of hair loss remedies, many seem to be hopeful of this procedure.

What is it? Simply stated, the procedure starts by taking sample hair follicles out of the same area which it is taken from for hair transplants, in the back of the head and below the occipital bone. Next they isolate the follicle producing cells from the bulb of the hair and grow them in culture. This way millions of new stem cells can be reproduced in several weeks.

The objective then is to re-implant these cells with a needle into the scalp, creating countless new follicles.

Some of the main obstacles they have been up against

• Quantity – The amount of hair produced is extremely unpredictable

• Density — Inconsistency with clumps of growth

• Angles – Erratic growth patterns, so the hair grows in every which direction giving a scruffy look.

Apparently, as you can guess, there are more problems to iron out than originally thought. One problem in a test done with mice, resulted in death from complications of infection after the re-implanting of the new follicle seeds. But some scientists and medical professionals indicate that success is just around the corner . . . so who knows . . . just tell me where I can buy stock!
