Bouffant Hairstyle and the Pill Box Hat

Bouffant Hairstyle

Say Bouffant Hairstyle and Jackie Kennedy Pops into mind

Jackie Kennedy, made famous the pill box hat and the bouffant hairstyle back in the early 60’s. Or, should I say, the “pill box hat” turned Jackie Kennedy into a most regal fashionista to be admired and copied. Did Jackie Kennedy know that daring to wear a unique hat, would give birth to her legacy as this elegant woman of styleBouffant Hairstyle and the Pill Box Hat? Her elegance and dignified manner came from her upbringing and her style was observed to blossom in her years as first lady. Her “pill box hat, and bouffant hairstyle” and sleeveless shifts became her trademark.

Her bouffant hairstyle started showing up on women all over the world. And, even though not all were singing praises of the “pill box hat,” that stood on top of this bouffant hairstyle, they did take notice and tried to emulate all they could of Jackie’s style.

The Martin Scorsese documentary, “No Direction Home,” on Bob Dylan’s development growing up in my home state of Minnesota, shows his transformation as a musical expository. It also contained his song, “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat.” He wrote this song in 66’ at the time Jackie Kennedy had made the hat and bouffant hairstyle famous.

Here’s what Bob Dylan thinks of hat’s and style . . .

Well, I see you got your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Yes, I see you got your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, you must tell me, baby

How your head feels under somethin’ like that

Under your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, you look so pretty in it

Honey, can I jump on it sometime?

Yes, I just wanna see

If it’s really that expensive kind

You know it balances on your head

Just like a mattress balances

On a bottle of wine

Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, if you wanna see the sun rise

Honey, I know where

We’ll go out and see it sometime

We’ll both just sit there and stare

Me with my belt

Wrapped around my head

And you just sittin’ there

In your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, I asked the doctor if I could see you

It’s bad for your health, he said

Yes, I disobeyed his orders

I came to see you

But I found him there instead

You know, I don’t mind him cheatin’ on me

But I sure wish he’d take that off his head

Your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

Well, I see you got a new boyfriend

You know, I never seen him before

Well, I saw him

Makin’ love to you

You forgot to close the garage door

You might think he loves you for your money

But I know what he really loves you for

It’s your brand new leopard-skin pill-box hat

  1. Well its not really saying he wrote it about Jackie, it just says he wrote it at the time Jackie Kennedy was wearing pill box hats. I think he wrote it about Edie too though.

  2. just a correction. the song was not just about jackie kennedy but also about edie sedgwick. Edie ACTUALLY wore the leopard skin pill box hat he talks about. Seeing as Bob Dylan had close ties with her, it is more likely he wrote the song about Edie.
