Hairstyle Trends Year End Review

Hairstyle Trends

Best and Worst Hairstyle Trends of the Year

This was the year of hairstyle trends. From short bobs to crazy colored hair, there were vast amounts of new and unusual looks. I wanted to take a look back at some of the best and worst hairstyle trends of the year and see what’s to come for next year.

Best Hairstyle Trends of the Year

Hairstyle Trends
Short Bob Hairstyles
Many women tried a version of the short bob hairstyle this year. From a-line bobs to short cropped bobs, these short bob hairstyle trends were seen on just about everyone. My favorite short bob hairstyle of the year was the a-line bob, which is shorter in the back and longer in the front. Celebrities like Jenny McCarthy were seen sporting this style, as was I.

.

Braided Hair
I saw braided hair everywhere in 2009. What a hairstyle trend this was! Celebrities were rocking this look on the red carpet while you and I wore this look on the beach. Small braids, big braids and everything in between encompassed the braided hairstyle trends look. I predict that we will see more of this look in 2010.

.

Long Hair
Although the short bob hairstyles were quite popular this year, long hair was also in. I saw a trend towards more relaxed long hair that looked undone. Strong wave patterns in long hair that we saw in 2008 relaxed in 2009 for a more laid back look.

Worst Hairstyle Trends of 2009

Drew Barrymore with dipped ends hair colorMy Picks for the Worst Hairstyle Trends of 2009

Crazy Colored Hair
Between Drew Barrymore’s dipped ends look and bad color jobs all over, 2009 seemed to have many crazy colored hairstyle trends. Although experimentation is sometimes good . . . these looks were very, very bad. I think we all learned our lesson in 2009 and crazy colored hair will not be back for the New Year.

Unnatural Blondes
So many celebrities went with an unnatural blonde look this year. Katharine McPhee, Rihanna and Lily Allen come to mind. If you, too, went with an unnatural blonde look this year, I urge you to return back to a more natural looking color. Platinum blonde isn’t widely flattering and these hairstyle trends will go away next year.

80’s Hairstyles
Twilight star Kristen Stewart was one of the first ones to get an 80’s hairstyle trends look. She channeled Joan Jett for her look, but others followed suit. Let’s leave 80’s hair in the 80’s and look toward a new decade starting in 2010.

What’s to Come

Hairstyle Trends

Hairstyle Trends for 2010
More Bobs
Hairstyle trends like the bob are so popular that I think they will stick around in the New Year. I expect we’ll be seeing longer bobs that are shoulder length as the shorter bob styles are grown out.

More Braids
Braids aren’t going anywhere. Simple to style and so cute, this hairstyle has staying power in 2010.

Relaxed Hairstyles
Hairstyles will continue to be more relaxed and laid back looking. There is a time and place for formal hair, but I don’t believe 2010 will be that time. Hairstyles like Blake Lively’s in Gossip Girl are gaining popularity so I see hairstyle trends heading this way.

Fresh Looks
New and exciting styles are to come. With all of the new hair color trends and hairstyle trends that creative hairdressers are coming up with, I think we’ll see a lot of new looks this year.

  1. I agree that Katharine McPhee’s blonde makeover was the wrrrrong move. She looks amazing as a brunette! Not so much with the lighter locks…
