Haircolor, What it says about you!

Haircolor, what it says about you!

The color you choose says volumes about who you are

Perhaps more important than the question of the chicken and the egg: What came first—your haircolor or your personality? Does flaming red haircolr inspire a passionate demeanor? Does deep brunette haircolor increase sincerity and sophistication? Do frosty blonde tips sharpen the confidence and cool of the successful career woman? Haircolor has always been closely associated with personality types and changing one’s look can be a way of showing a different part of yourself, in effect, “letting down your hair.”

“Haircolor, what it says about you!“The wrong haircolor can change a woman’s personality,” says Yenz Von Tilborg, platform artist and teacher for John Amico Products of Chicago. Yenz and Reinout Von Tilborg use John Amico’s Jalyd Colorhead line to produce glowing haircolor results with no ammonia, and believe that there’s nothing more powerful than haircolor to convey who you are to the world. That’s why they advise clients to find themselves in the mirror. “Ask yourself what you want to convey through your choice of style,” Yenz says. To give your persona more power through your hairstyle will add confidence and strength to your life.”

BLONDE haircolor can be seen as a confident, strong and sexual haircolor choice. It can also denote power and clout, as in Hillary Clinton’s blonde-streaked bob. Or, it can portray youthfulness and femininity, as in Kate Hudson’s flirtatious flaxen curls, or surfer-girl sexiness like Cameron Diaz’s sun-kissed hue.

BRUNETTE tones suggest intelligence, glamour and seriousness. Brunettes are also more likely to have the most children, according to research conducted by Clairol. Considered more earthy and practical, brunettes are also perceived as hard-working and sometimes stand-offish. Earth-mother activist Angelina Jolie denotes the serious brunette, as does driven Demi Moore and screen legend Katharine Hepburn. The exotic, mysterious side of brunette is exemplified by Cher, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Salma Hayek.

REDHEADS are considered hot-tempered, exciting and high-maintenance. Studies show that they’re also the least likely to have higher education and the most likely to have active social lives. But it could be those correlations are just because redheads are also known to be more independent creative and fun—think Lucille Ball, Bernadette Peters and Debra Messing. Red is also the color women gravitate toward when they want to get creative with haircolor. Working in the arts or any creative field inspires women to stand out, and red is a great attention-getter!

If you’re thinking of going red and you have darker or olive skin tones and dark eyes, Yenz and Reinout Von Tilborg recommend a mahogany hued haircolor to add femininity and bring out softness. For paler skin and light eyes, a copper tone blended with blonde haircolor can really make blue or green eyes pop. Copper tones added to lighter hair is one of the hottest trends in haircolor this season,” notes Yenz. Whichever hue best matches your sense of style, however, you should go to a professional for best results. “Nature gave us many haircolors, and nothing looks less natural than one flat tone across your hair,” the John Amico color pros conclude.

STYLE MATTERS

Hairstyle choices also communicate personality traits. For instance, pulled-back styles and ponytails portray seriousness and hard work as clearly as pushed up shirtsleeves Longer hairstyles are sexier, shorter cuts and bangs can be youthful and fun, and very short hair is pragmatic and low maintenance, signaling a no-nonsense personality. And what about curls vs. straight hair? Curlier hairstyles are considered more romantic, while wild curls imply an uninhibited personality. Straight styles like Gwyneth Paltrow’s bring to mind earth girl simplicity and tousled, sexy curls express a personality that is fun and sociable, like Julia Roberts or Sarah Jessica Parker.

Changing your haircolor and your hairstyle is often synonymous with starting a new phase in life, a new job or a relationship. Reese Witherspoon recent appearances on the Red Carpet with longer sleeker, more dimensional blonde strands and flirty fringe marked her reemergence into the singles scene. Cameron Diaz’s switch to sophisticated brunette may signal that she’s ready for a new, more mature relationship. And, in an extreme example, Britney Spears’s head-Shaving let the world know that she’s trying to resolve more serious issues.

Yenz and ReinOut Von Tilborg help clients choose haircolor by looking at skin tone, eye color and their total presentation along with their lifestyle. “If you want to appear more knowledgeable, for instance, and are entering a profession where you may be speaking and you’d like to make people listen to you, a darker haircolor will draw attention to your mouth,” Yenz notes. “Wearing red lipstick brings even more attention and lets your audience know that you’re direct.” The bottom line: always choose a haircolor and style that are right for you. “Unlike shopping for clothes and trying on different styles and colors, you can’t hang your new hairstyle back on the rack afterward!”
