Hair Styling Tips of the Trade

If you want to learn only ONE thing that can make or break your hair style . . . it would be to perfect some new hair styling techniques.

“Learn the Right Techniques for Your Hair Style”

If I only had a dollar for every time a student has said to me, “yeah, my hair style always looks great when I leave the hair styling salon, but . . . I can never get it to look the same.”

Any new hair style requires learning the how-to’s of achieving the look it was meant to be. By not taking the time to learn how your new hair style is styled, you will either have no-style at all, OR you’ll have it quickly looking like your old hair style.

Learn these three hair styling tips and you won’t fall into an outdated or unfashionable looking hair style.

  • Use the Right Product

Ask your hair stylist to walk you through what products they are using when styling your hair. You may not need to use all the hair care products they choose to use, but find out which product you can’t do without! Straightening balm, pomade, shine serum, root lifter, curl enhancer or body builders, all have a unique effect on the end results you can achieve in a hair style.

A good rule of thumb to keep in mind with hair care product usage is  . . .  less is better than more!

  • Use the Right Hair Styling Tools

There is a big difference in the end results a flat-iron and a large rod curling iron will give your hair. Velcro rollers vs. hot rollers, how hot they are, how long you leave them in and how you set the hair will change the hair style dramatically. Pin curls or rag curls, blow-drier round brush, blow-drier flat brush, roughed up blow-drier . . . all change the look of your hair style.

Take time to experiment . . . note the subtle differences and you’ll quickly find what works best for you.

  • Use the Right Technique

This is HUGE. The right technique includes, blow-drying, product application and how-to’s of hair styling. The subtleties of how long you hold the curling iron in your hair and precisely at what angle you hold it at, is important in getting the end result you desire. Here are basic things with each tool that determine what kind of end results you will achieve when styling your hair . . . so experiment and find your best results.

Blow drying - upside down, flat brush, round brush, heat setting, smoothing or roughing up

Curling iron - size, temperature, positioning, length of time in hair

Flat-iron - heat setting, section size, positioning

Velcro rollers - roller size, section size, wet or dry hair, with heat or no heat, length of time in hair

Hot rollers - roller size, section size, heat setting, length of time in hair

Pin curls - size, section size, wet or dry and length of time in hair
