My natural hair color is like an off black with brownish highlights. I wanted a honey brown so I went to a salon and brought a pic of Eva Mendez to give them an idea of what I wanted. I specifically said that knowing dark hair has orange red highlights I didn't want that brassy orangish look. The girl showed me strands and told me that she could give me the picture's color. She did some highlights with foil first then she did my ends with the color. After that she did my roots. Like 3 minutes later when she went to get the wrapping paper to put around my head I could already see the color change. She wrapped it and had me sit. She cut a guys hair and then washed my hair. When I looked in the mirro I wanted to cry. I had that brassy yellow look on the roots. I could've done that at home myself. She said that once she dried and styled it would look different. I knew it couldn't be so because hair looks darker when wet. I was so unhappy as she was drying that I wanted to throw up. She insisted that it was like the pic and that I could give my head a break and come back the next day if I was still unhappy. How could I walk out like that? I told her that I would feel the same the next day so she said she would darken it some but the highlights would tone down. All the girls at the salon gave suggestions and agreed as to what tone she would now use. My hair still had a brassy (I know it's not orange) almost like when you think a ring is gold but it's fake and that orangy tone starts coming out. I let it be because they all agreed that I was just not used to it. What went wrong? Did she miss a step that you're supposed to do with dark hair so that it won't have that wierd color that I know is not orange but looks so fake. Now I wouldn't know where to go and trust that they truly do know how to work dark hair.

Thanks for your comment Valerie. I agree with your formula. I sometimes don't try to explain the steps I would take to get a desired shade because I think it sounds too confusing.
But you hit it right on the nose!
Thanks again!

It sounds to me that the problem was the hairstylist did not use the correct filler in the tint back. The first color that needs to be applied when doing the toner after highlights is GOLD, but it shouldn't stop there. Gold is JUST the filler which gives the chocolate brown something to hold on to. If the gold is not there then ANY color she puts on the highlights will wash out. If I had been the stylist, I would have put a demi-permanent color of gold on and then followed up afterwards with the next missing undertone until I reached the correct undertone for chocolate brown. THEN and only then I would apply the final color which would be "Chocolate Brown". By using "demi-permanent" haircolor it would be less damaging to the hair and the end result would hold and also have beautiful shine.
