Friends New Hairstyle Not Good . . . Do I Tell Her?

New Hairstyle Gone Wrong?

Her new hairstyle is a faux pas, should I comment?

It’s hard to look a friend in the eye when her new hairstyle or hair color is just plain wrong for her. You have no doubt found yourself in this notably uncomfortable situation once or twice in your life. I know I have been there and it’s one of those awkward moments where, if you haven’t thought it through, you may easily say something you wished you hadn’t or, like the elephant in the room, the silence of the non-response tactic can be deafening!

“Be Diplomatic on Friends New Hairstyle”Let’s say your meeting your friends for lunch and one of them shows up with an obvious new hairstyle. Should you make a comment even if you don’t like it? Experts tell us body language speaks louder than words. You only have a matter of a millisecond before your unfortunate friend will read into your unconscious reactions to her new hairstyle. Instead of getting caught with the deer in the headlights response, there is a smoother way to get through this moment. What to do . . . what not to do

The New Hairstyle Compliment . . . Not!

First of all, you know that an insincere compliment is no compliment at all. In this instance, the insincere compliment comes flying out in an attempt to cover up our uncomfortableness.  We all count on our good friends to give us good objective feedback, at least I find it true for most women when it comes to a new hairstyle or hair color. It’s hard to be objective about ourselves. We go to the mirror with prejudices, that most often others clearly don’t see. What we need is for our friends to tell it like it is . . . just with a little bit of tact.

The New Hairstyle Etiquette!

Keep in mind any new hairstyle or hair color has the option of being changed. So don’t let the expression on your face scare her!  Knowing and understanding that will keep you and your friend from the fear that she is ’stuck’ with the new hairstyle from hell. I didn’t understand that concept before becoming a hairdresser. Even though hairdressers are not all the same, there is one who can fix the problem. It may even be the hairdresser who did the new hairstyle to begin with.

A good response would be to ask her,”You’ve got a new hairstyle, are you going to a new hairdresser?” This will give you a breather, and she can let you know if she is thrilled or not with her new hairstyle. If she isn’t happy either, you can help by encouraging her to get it fixed. If she likes it and you don’t . . . just remember to be tactful in your comments. Again, your not so zealous response will give her food for thought.
