Back to School Hairstyles- Keep it Simple!

The transition from summer beachy hairstyles to back to school hairstyles doesn’t need to be anything  major or complicated. The most important thing you can do to have great looking hair going back to school is to give your hair a little extra TLC. A few deep conditioning hair treatments and a great haircut for your hair type are a couple of things that will go a long way in healthy, shiny hair is its healthiest and shiniest shape. After that, keep it simple and your back to school hairstyle will be fabulous!
“Back to School Hairstyle”
Back to school hairstyles should be healthy!

Since summer has its ways of fading, drying out and damaging your hair, now is the time to spend a little more effort getting your hair back to health. It will pay off to take a little bit of time to do these things for the health of your hair. If you swim in salt water or a pool you should use a clarifying shampoo and moisturize your hair to get it healthy, shiny, and more vibrant. Great looking back to school hairstyles start with healthy hair! When hair is dull, dry and damaged looking, no matter how much time you try camouflaging it by styling it, you still have dull, dry damaged looking hair. Here’s a routine that will get your hair in its best shape possible for whatever back to school hairstyles you choose to wear!

  • Use a clarifying shampoo once or twice a week if needed, to rid your hair of product buildup.
  • Use a deep hair conditioning treatment once a week, after clarifying your hair. (Joico K-Pak Deep-Penetrating Reconstructor was voted best deep conditioner at Stylists Choice Awards).
  • Use a shower cap or saran wrap and towel to generate heat, leave it in your hair for at least 20 minutes in order to penetrate the hair shaft more deeply. A hood dryer is a great way to deliver heat when doing a deep conditioning treatment.
  • Add moisture if you have dry hair, by using a good hair moisturizing conditioner or moisturizing leave-in hair conditioner. (PureOlogy Hydrate Conditioner was also a Stylists Choice Awards winner)
  • Add protein if your hair is lifeless. That is a hair conditioner with collagen and elastin which adds a slight feel of thickness to the hair. (Try Frederic Fekkai Protein RX Reparative Conditioner)

Back to school hairstyles should work with your hair type!

Keep it simple – Your back to school hairstyle should not be a style that requires a lot of work before going out the door. Instead, the hairstyle you wear should work with your hair type and not against it. Getting a hairstyle that works with the natural grain of your hair will give you more easy styling options.

Unless you are very talented with styling your hair, a big hairstyle change may mean significantly more time spent upfront in your styling routine each morning. Who needs this kind of stress when you’re pressed for time? Consider saving the new hairstyle change until after you are into your new back to school routine.  If you want to make a hairstyle change, remember less-is-more.  A small change like wearing bangs or no bangs can make a huge difference in your look without a lot of fuss.

Learn 3 different ways to style your back to school hairstyle – By spending just a little time up front learning a couple new hair styling techniques, you can give your hair a break, save yourself time every day and get a reputation as being fashionista too!

You will probably have a favorite way of hair styling, but by changing it around a bit, it won’t get old and tired looking.  At every haircut appointment be sure to ask your hairdresser to show you a new way of styling your hair. Make sure to make note of the styling hair care product recommendations at the same time.  If you would rather buy over-the-counter hair products, just stay with the same type of product your hairstylist recommended i.e.; mouse, gel, oil, straightening serum etc.

Learn how to use one new hair styling tool. Try a flat iron, different size curling iron, velcro rollers, hot rollers, rag rollers, bendy rollers, pin curls, roller brush iron, blow-dryer, and diffuser.

Learn to style with a hair care product only and give your hair a break. Try one of these, gel, spray gel, mousse, pomade, serum, curl enhancer, shine product, smoothing product, styling cream, root lifter, sculpting lotion, thermal spray, and volumizer.

Learn a new updo. If your hair is long enough, learn one new way to get a classic, casual, contemporary or elegant look. It will change your look totally and quickly. A good hairdresser will be happy to help you out here. Your hair doesn’t need to be as long as you may think to do some chic updo or half updo hairstyles.

Learn to braid.  Braids once again have made a big comeback!  Allow yourself a little practice time to learn a new braid, it will give your hair a break and give you some unique looks of your own. Classes are given at my local Community Education; check it out in your area. The library is another source for learning how to do new braids! Or, just invite over one or two of your friends that have the knack!

The Waterfall braid . . . . Love this look!

    Fringe Trim Tips for DIY’ers

4 Tips for an Easy Fringe Trim!

I hope your hairdresser has offered to do a free fringe trim in-between your regular hairstyling appointment. If not, you might find out by asking the question; what do you charge for a fringe trim?

The subject may have simply never come up during your appointment or, may have just slipped their mind, so asking is worth it.  If you find out it will cost more than you want to pay or, it just doesn’t fit into your schedule, consider doing a fringe trim at home between appointments.

“How to Give Yourself a Fringe Trim” It’s really not that difficult to trim your own bangs. The main thing to know is it’s a detail orientated task. Take your time, be patient and pay attention to these details to get it right.  (It’s smart to be honest with yourself and if you have two left thumbs, leave it to your hairdresser.) You probably already know, it’s easy to get it wrong if you wing-it without a plan, so for those who feel it’s an amiable task, here’s a plan and a video on how-to do a fringe trim at home.

Wash and dry your hair, smoothing out fringe as straight as possible. If you have a flat-iron, pull through bangs to straighten..

    1. Separate previously cut fringe out from the rest of your hair, securing the rest out of the way with a headband or putting by into a ponytail. .
    2. Keep in mind you only want to snip off about 1/8th to 1/4th inch of length at a time, following the line the hairdresser has previously cut. You can always cut more later if needed..
    3. Using a fine-toothed comb and a sharp small scissors, start by taking small sections. Be aware to keep a soft and even tension on the hair as you cut, slight tension differation will make a difference in the final length. Also, remember your bangs will bounce up some after you cut them..
    4. Once you’ve completed the cut following the previously cut fringe, step back and view the results all together. You can soften the line by ‘point cutting’ into the tips of the hair as shown in the video below.

Cowlicks are worth mentioning here.  If you have a strong cowlick in front, it is better to wear a long, angled fringe rather than trying to wear a fringe that is trimmed straight across. If you have a more subdued cowlick in front, you may be able to style it straight with a flat iron . . . your hairdresser will be able to help you out with what type of fringe trim works best for you!

“We use clip in hair extensions on everyone in the show!”

Dancing with the Stars 2010 has all sorts of tricks up their sleeves in making their contestants look flirty, tantalizing and delectable. And now we know for sure that a BIG part of those magnificently mussed hairdos are done with clip in human hair extensions. “Clip in Human Hair Extensions”So don’t feel bad if you don’t have as much hair as Pamela Anderson . . . it’s a fantasy!
Co-host Brooke Burke, with Velcro rollers in tow, shows us some of the tricks-of-the-trade used by hairstylists, makeup artists and wardrobe professionals in this behind-the-scenes video of a typical dress rehearsal from the show. From contouring make-up on Tony Dovolani’s abs, to collagen patches on Kate’s crows-feet and the night before spray tanning sessions for all to have that healthy, even, glow . . . it’s show business, it’s make-believe, it’s Hollywood!!

Head hairstylist Mary Guerrero admits everyone on the show wears clip in hair extensions. I figured most are clip in human hair extensions as she is seen backcombing some with curling irons nearby and speaks of using products on them (you are not suppose to use products on synthetic hair extensions) “The secret of locking in the hair extensions, says Mary, is using products, hairclips and rubber bands that we criss-cross pins to, so that it will be ready for stunt hair.”

    Clip in Human Hair Extensions

Clip in human hair extensions are more expensive than synthetic hair extensions because they will hold up to curling, coloring, washing straightening and even perming. So think before you buy. If you think you may want to change the color or style of your hair extensions, I suggest you opt to spend a little more up-front for a product that will last and be as versatile as you are!
