Can’t decide to cut in side swept bangs?

I had a client ask me the other day, if side swept bangs were still in style.  My honest answer was “Since they look good on you and you like them, keep wearing them!”  Side swept bangs draw attention to the eyes and look good on every face shape.  These bangs also soften and slim the angles of the face.  You can wear them with short or long hair as well!  They look ultra sleek on Nicole Richie, her soft side swept bangs and fringe give her a totally soft and feminine look.
  
Side swept bangs can be blended in with a layered hair style, but if you have a blunt haircut your bangs really don’t need to be blended in.  You need to keep your side bangs long and tapered to the side they are combed.  You can control the amount of hair you sweep over, by moving your part up or down.  Consider having your bangs cut with the slide cutting technique or razor cut.
  
Razor cutting your bangs give them a soft, wispy, grown-out look.  The razor cuts the ends at an angle so the hair moves more and blends better.  Fine and medium textured hair types respond well to razor cutting, showing visible separation on the ends.

Do you like Hilary Duff’s retro-looking side swept bangs?  You can create some of your own by backcombing underneath, then smoothing the top layer over them and spray with hairspray.  I like Joishape by Joico; it’s a shaping and finishing spray that you can use with blow-dryers and flat-irons.  Joishape is a lighter spray that allows you to work with your hair after spraying it.

Another cutting option for side swept bangs is undercutting. Leaving a longer top section causes the hair to curve under slightly.  Most hair types respond nicely to undercutting, especially fine hair.  I like Kate Hudson’s under-cut side swept bangs because the ends are tapered underneath, giving her bangs a soft, round look.
 
I would say that side swept bangs are still very much in fashion, since they truly do look good on everyone!

Fergie Pictures with her Bohemian Braids are everywhere

Take a look at the picture of Fergie’s awesome side hanging braid, that she wore to the 2008 Teen Choice Awards.  Isn’t she stunning!  She possessed a classic Bohemian hairstyle with her gown and her thick, fishtail braid.

Starting with a center part and a low pony tail at the nape of her neck, Fergie’s own hair is wrapped around extensions and braided in the fishtail style. There are two pieces of hair in the front hanging in face-framing curls.  The braid hanging over her shoulder looks great with her gown’s halter neckline. I love seeing her in that braid, it’s such a beautiful way to retrain hair and add dimension at the same time.  The long side braid has accompanied many evening gowns down the red carpet this year!

The act of braiding is an art form that has been passed down through many generations.  The more you braid, the better you will get at it, remember practice makes perfect!  It’s always best to braid hair when it’s dry.  When you braid wet hair it shrinks and dries tightly to the head, causing tension.  This tension can cause breakage and hair loss.  So remember to blow dry your hair before braiding!

You can create a fishtail braid like Fergie’s picture above for yourself.  First, start with a pony tail to gather your hair together.  Then separate the ponytail into two halves, take two strands from the outside of each half and pick up a piece of hair as you cross the strands over each other.  Repeat and work your way down until you reach the end of your braid, then secure it with an elastic band.  If you want, you can wrap a piece of hair around the elastic band to hide it.  It’s easier to do on dry, one length hair, but you can also braid layered hair if you use some smoothing gel on it.

As a stylist I think her bohemian braid was an awesome choice. Hopefully, Fergie’s braid will encourage more fun and trendy looks for long hair.
