Quiff Hair Trend Report

Quiff Hair Trend

Quiff hair trend goes ‘glunge’ for spring!

Quiffs are not going away soon according to the renowned hairdresser and Redken platform artist, Sam Villa.

What is a quiff you ask? Quiff is in the dictionary as a word derived in Britain meaning; a prominent forelock; or from the U.K; a part of a man’s hairstyle in which the hair at the front is brushed upward and backward.“Quiff??? Get Used
to the Term”

I would have known what Sam was talking about if he had used the word ‘pompadour’ instead of ‘quiff.’ James Dean, Elvis, John Travolta and The Fonz, all wore the pompadour famously, but maybe they called it the ‘quiff’ in the U.K.?  Who knows?  Please share with us if you have any know-how of the ‘quiffs‘ origin.

Maybe the term started being used here in the U.S. when women started wearing quiffs? Rihanna, Gwen Stefani, Beyonce and Jessica Alba have all sported a ‘quiff’ in the past year, only we’ve been calling them pompadour’s too. (I’ve also seen ‘quiffs’ referenced as ‘quaffs’ in other news sources . . . just goes to show the confusion hairstyle names can bring.)

The new ‘quiff’ Sam Villa predicts from the runways of Paris, will be out and about this spring and looks a bit more disheveled (if that can happen) than the current quiff.   He adds, the word being used best to describe the new spring hair trends in Paris is, ‘glunge’ (more creative terminology) indicating a sort of glamorous-grunge look!   Enuff said!

The new glungier quiff (my words) is more texurized than previous quiffs. The new spring hair trends have a sort of roughed up texture that still looks feminine but also appears wild and sexy,’ says Villa. “It’s all about glamorous-grunge looks that appear purposely dehydrated.”

Keep your eye out for these new spring hair trends and we’ll bring you more of the ‘glunge’ looks as they come in!

Some ‘quiffs’ of old!

Oscar Hair 2011 Best Hairdresser

Oscar Hair Styles

Hair at the Oscars

And the Oscar hair award goes to . . . .

Adir Abergel, is the hairdresser behind some of Hollywood’s most glamorous stars, Jessica Biel, Kiera Knightly, Jennifer Garner and more. But, Adir Abergel wins our vote for ‘Best Hairdresser’ at the 2011 Oscar Awards for his inspiring naturally glamorous hairstyles on co host, Anne Hathaway!

Adir Abergel was the man behind what we think were some of the best Oscar Hair Styles of the night. I imagine he had an ‘Edward Scissorhands” quick change style going on behind the scenes (minus the scissors). But, the hairstyle changes he created for Anne’s costume changes looked easy, natural and unforced. Her hairstyles were flawless!  Bravo Adir!

When asked what his secret is to creating red carpet, naturally glamorous Oscar hair, Adir said, “I believe that in any job that is creative it’s about a collaborative effort, making sure that the hair never overpowers the woman and that the woman always shines thru. I use very little hair care product so the hair always has movement and bounce and doesn’t feel stiff and matt. Shine creates youth and body and movement creates sexuality.”

Touche’ Adir Abergel!  Don’t you love a hairdresser who doesn’t force the issue of needing an arsenal of hair product to get a great hair at the Oscars?  We love that he has the gonads to admit that great hair needs to be able to shine through and that can only happen by not ODing it with too much product!
