Spring Hair Styles – Meet the New Shag Haircut
The shag haircut is almost boyish
Spring hair styles this year are all about messy, roughed-up hair like this new shag haircut. I think we’ll be seeing more ladies taking the plunge this spring into shorter hair styles like this shag haircut with lots of tousled, sexy layers and thicker, heavier bangs. Spring hair styles will have a messier, roughed up, textured look whether short, medium or long.“Spring Hair the
New Shag Haircut”
This new take on the shag haircut is here just in time for a new spring hair styles look! Spring is one of the busiest seasons in hair salons. Customers are ready for a change and most creative hairdressers are eager to update their client’s looks. Spring hair styles like this shag haircut, are the perfect no-fuss do.
Allure magazine debuted hairdresser Sam McKnight’s new shag haircut in their February edition. Sam says,” The new shag haircut has a definite rock and roll feel to it. It’s almost boyish, more messy than pretty, like the shag haircut of the 70′s.” He also adds the style looks good at every length and every face shape can wear it!
At the 2011 Spring Paris Fashion Week at Balmain, Sam McKnight did his magic on fashion model Carman Kass . . . what a cool transformation, don’t you think?? The shag haircut is all he says it is, sexy, wild with a kind of boyish look.
Freja Erichsen’s March 2011 cover shot for Vogue Brazil shows a long shag haircut with heavy fringe is in-vogue!
A little side story on the 70′s shag haircut . . . it relates . . . I remember cutting the 70′s shag haircut on a girlfriend in high school. I wasn’t a hairdresser yet, but I figured after reading about the shag haircut, I could cut it! And, actually I didn’t do badly! My girlfriend loved it (which may have, on a subconscious level, encouraged me to go into this profession.) All that the 70′s shag haircut required was to pull it straight up and chop it off. The shag haircut was after all, what it said it was, shaggy . . . not perfect. This relates to Sam’s recommendations on how to get the cut below.
Get the Cut
See if you can find the humor that I did in Sam McKnight’s tips on how to get this shag haircut;
- Bring in a photo – as the word ‘shag haircut’ means different things to different hairdressers.
- Ask your hairdresser to cut like an amateur – tell your hairdresser to make it look like you took a pair of scissor to your hair yourself.
- Seriously consider bangs – full bangs aren’t mandatory but do think about having at least a few brow skimming bangs which can be swept to the side.
I think the shag haircut works best on wavy hair or soft curly hair types. With natural wave, a shag haircut will take on an easy, messy, unkempt look without doing a thing to it. And, the shag haircut grows out well. A bit of mousse may be all you need for more definition. One I like is Paul Mitchell Sculpting Foam with Conditioner. Scrunching your layers with mousse, will put a little more staying power in the shape you want and still allow for movement.
