FAQ’s on Baby Hair Care

Baby Hair Care Tips

I don’t remember getting baby hair care tips especially when I had my first baby. Becoming a new mom for the second time just this past month, was a wonderful experience. My newest addition, Madelyn, has a ton of hair just like her sister did. As I have been caring for her hair, I thought about all the questions new moms must have about baby hair care. Here are some frequently asked questions on baby hair care that may help you out if you are a new mom.

What kind of shampoo should I use on my baby?
“Baby Hair Care Answers”

There are so many options for baby hair care products that it may seem a bit overwhelming to choose a shampoo for your baby. Johnson and Johnson is a popular favorite among new moms and doctors. My preferred shampoo is Method Baby Squeaky Green Baby Hair Wash and Body Wash for the all natural ingredients and delicious marshmallow smell. Read more about Method Baby Products on their website.  Experts agree however that most babies will be fine with whatever shampoo you choose to use.

Do I need to use conditioner on my babies hair?

I don’t believe you need to use a conditioner on your babies hair until their hair is long enough to get tangles. If tangles become a problem, try Paul Mitchell’s Kids Taming Spray Ouch-Free Detangler. I use this on my older daughter and it gives lightweight conditioning combined with detangling. The detangling factor will make both your lives easier, believe me! You can find this one at your local beauty supply store.

Johnson and Johnson makes my next favorite detangler and conditioner called, No More Tangles Detangling Spray. Johnson and Johnson baby products can be found found at your local mass market retailer like Target. Try either one of these shampoos; they both work great on any baby hair type.

Do I still need to shampoo if my baby is bald?

It is still a good idea to shampoo your babies head even if you see little to no hair. The scalp still needs to be cleaned and even if it appears that your baby is bald, there is still a tiny bit of ‘peach fuzz’ type hair there which needs to be cared for.
What is cradle cap?

Experts agree that cradle cap, also called infantile seborrheic dermatitis, is fairly common in babies. Babycenter.com says,  ‘If your baby’s scalp has flaky, dry skin that looks like dandruff, or even thick, oily, yellowish or brown scaling or crusting patches, it’s most likely cradle cap. Cradle cap isn’t cute, but it’s harmless. Most often it shows up in the first few months of life, and it usually clears up on its own in about six to 12 months — although some babies may have it for several years.”

To combat cradle cap you can do a few things. One is to use a specialized shampoo like Mustela Foam Shampoo for Newborns that gently exfoliates the flakes off the scalp. You can also brush the scalp or hair when bathing your baby to aid in exfoliation as well. Find Mustela products.

The good news is although it doesn’t look very pretty, cradle cap will go away. If your babies scalp is inflamed your doctor can prescribe a cortisone cream or an over the counter or prescription, seborrhea shampoo. In the mean time, try the tips mentioned above and remember when need be you can always find a cute cap and give your baby a little style all their own!

Triple Barrel Curling Irons – The New Wave!
“Triple Barrel
Curling Irons”

The triple barrel curling iron is back! Regular curling irons can give your hair added body, curl and bounce that you may not have naturally but, the triple barrel curling irons are the only one that can give you the perfect S wave! Triple barrel curling irons give your hair a unique s-wave pattern that we are seeing on models and celebrities everywhere lately.

I like to use triple barrel curling irons on clients who want a beautiful s-wave in their hair, whether they want a vintage hairstyle, like Renee Zellweger in Chicago or they want beachy waves like Taylor Swift in the pictures above.

Using a triple barrel curling iron isn’t as hard as you might suspect. This short video  explains exactly how it’s done. I’d like to add that you should use a heat protectant spray on your hair before using triple barrel curling irons (or any curling iron) to protect it from unnecessary heat damage.

Hot Tools 3-Barrel Waver, Triple Barrel Curling Irons

My favorite triple barrel curling iron is the Hot Tools Professional 3 Barrel Waver with gold plates. This iron  heats up to 360 degrees and has the option of a high and low heat setting. I use this curling iron regularly and it works great!

Another popular triple barrel curling iron is the Revlon Perfect Heat 3 Barrel Waver Irons . Although I haven’t used this one, I have seen that it has gotten good reviews, so be sure to check it out too in your search. It has ceramic technology and heats up in less than 60 seconds which is great news for getting out the door fast!.

Don’t forget to use a heat protectant spray prior to styling with triple barrel curling irons and take your time when using this type of curling iron, making sure to get all strands of hair. The s-waves created by a triple barrel curling iron look beautiful no matter what the occasion. Don’t forget to experiment with different hairstyles and updo’s too when using these curling irons, you can come up with looks you’ve never worn before!

How to Blow Dry Hair

How To Blow Dry Hair

How to Get Salon Quality Blow Dry Results at Home

“How To Blow
Dry Hair”
It always happens. You go to the salon and receive the most amazing blow dry. You think, ‘Maybe I can do this at home.’ But the moment you pick up the hair dryer and start styling, the magic is gone. So how can you blow dry hair at home so it looks like you just stepped out of a hair salon? It all depends on your hair type.

Fine Hair Looking for Volume

You’ll need:

  • A volumizing shampoo
  • Small Velcro rollers
  • A light styling spray
  • A round, boar bristle brush

“For volume, it’s wonderful” says Infusium23 hairdresser Lisa Chiccine, owner of the Lisa Chiccine Salon in New York City. Your hair length will help determine the size of brush you need. Women with short hair should use one that’s small. Chin to shoulder length hair needs a medium sized brush, while the large brush should be used on long hair, says Anthony Cristiano, Red Door National Creative Director.

Your How To Blow Dry Hair Styling Strategy:

Chiccine recommends using a volumizing shampoo in the shower. Once your hair has dried a bit and is damp, section it and begin blow drying with the round brush.

Be careful not to over-dry hair, it’s the most common mistake women make at home. Chiccine says fine hair collapses when over-dried and your look will be ruined.

When you’ve achieved the shape you want (and can’t believe you got!) hold the hair on the brush and hit it with a blast of hot air. Follow up with a moment of cold air to set the style, Chiccine says.

Finally, set in Velcro rollers. The best technique for adding volume: Pick up the hair section and pull it forward. Then, wind the roller back and down onto the head. Seal your hairstyle with a light finishing spray. Avoid anything heavy that can weigh hair down, Cristiano says.

Thick hair and you want a sleek look:

You’ll need:

  • A flat paddle brush
  • Small Velcro rollers
  • Spray shine

Your How To Blow Dry Hair Styling Strategy:

Begin blow drying when hair is about 25% dry. Be careful towel-drying because it can “rough up the hair” and cause frizzing, Chstiano says.

Section hair and begin work on the front areas first. Take pieces about a half-inch to an inch wide but don’t go larger than the width of the brush, he says.

After styling, wrap hair in small Velcro rollers to help keep it sleek. Chiccine recommends smaller rollers because a larger size may give hair that dreaded “puffy” look.

Once you’re done styling, you can add a shine spray if you like. Cristiano recommends Tricoci Match Radiance Spray.

Frizzy or curly hair:

You’ll Need:

  • Frizz-taming shampoo for frizzy hair, Curly hair needs a hair care product that will relax and moisturize hair, Chiccine says
  • A ceramic brush. Ceramic brushes can heat up and Chiccine says heat breaks down frizzy hair
  • Large Velcro rollers, which help stretch hair.

Your How To Blow Dry Hair Styling Strategy:

Hair should have some dampness when you begin styling. Don’t wait too long after showering, warns Chiccine, because dry hair will not straighten.

Section hair and use the ceramic brush to dry and style. Begin in the front, not the back. If you start at the back, once you come to the hairline, it will be dry,” Chiccine says.

Once hair is styled and straightened, wrap it in large Velcro rollers. Be sure to use large rollers because small ones will add volume. And frizzy or curly hair needs to be stretched over a large roller to straighten it.

Use a lot of tension and stretch the hair as you wrap it. And be careful with the ends so you don’t get “fish hooks,” Chiccine says.

Curly hair and you want luscious curls:

You’ll Need:

  • A leave-in conditioner that will give your hair weight and fill in the cuticles, says Cristiano
  • A large, wide tooth comb. Only comb your hair in the shower, not afterwards, Cris- tiano says
  • Styling gel
  • A hair dryer with diffuser attachment

Your How To Blow Dry Hair Styling Strategy:

The process starts in the shower when you apply a leave-in conditioner and run a comb through your hair, After you shower, gently squeeze the hair and blot it lightly in a towel, Cristiano says.

While your hair is still wet, apply a styling gel evenly throughout. Next, take one-inch sections and twirl the strand around your finger. “This will help saturate product and give hair more of a curl,” he says.

Finally, blow dry hair with a diffuser and only use cold air. Warm air swells the hair and opens the cuticle, which may encourage frizz, Cristiano says.
