Best Hairdressers get happy feet!

I know I’m not the only hairdresser out there who, in the name of fashion, has put up with the discomforts of the feet! I know you ladies know what I’m talking about, those cute little shoes that makes-the-look but ruins-da-feet!

“Best Hairdressers get happy feet!”Well, maybe this is easy for me to say now, after a certain age but ‘cute” . . .  it’s just not worth it! Ouch! As if a hairdressers job isn’t hard enough on the bod, standing hours on end in various bent up contortions, but now add the wrong shoes and you’ve got a recipe for disaster . . . bunions, disc problems. (A hairdresser friend, Bud, says his chiropractor told him that hairdressers make up a major part of their business!)

My best friend Ginger, also a hairdresser, was the first person who told me about Skechers, Shape-Ups. She loved them. (I had seen a blurb for them on Oprah a while back) She had gotten a pair of these shoes that came recommended by her sisters . . . also hairdressers. Shape-Ups are designed to change the way the wearer walks and stands.

The shoe contains a really soft cushioned insert and is designed in a way that it rolls from heels to toes. Skechers Shape-Ups claims to promote weight loss and to tone muscles. “Shape up while you walk.” They also claim the design of the shoe improves posture, improves blood circulation, strengthens the back, tightens abdominal muscles firms buttocks muscles, reduces cellulite and tones thighs and firms calf muscles. Whew!

These shoes come at a hefty price, about $110.00. But I’m sure all you best hairdressers out there know the value of having great footwear! I bought my first pair of Shape-Ups about a month ago, and I think they are great for walking, shopping and standing. They give relief to my knees and ankles but I still find I can’t wear them all day. I feel muscles, especially in my lower legs that become tired after some hours of wearing these shoes. The manufacturer says you need to work up the length of time you wear them. Skechers, also includes a CD with your purchase of Shape-Ups, for instruction on stretching and warming up before walking.

American Salon also had an article this month on Skechers Shape-Ups and the value they may offer hairdressers. Reading it reminded me of the thousands of hairdressers out there who might do themselves a good turn by finding great shoes for their work.

I bought mine at “The Mall of America” in the Skecher’s store which was the only place to get them here locally. I also ended up buying a great pair of really comfy, cute, sandals for half price with the other purchase.  You can also find them online at www.sketchers.com.

When Hair Dryers Don’t Work!

When Hair Dryers Fail!

I had a funny flashback this morning, to an o-l-d trick I used to do back in the 70’s, to style my hair smooth and sleek, without hair dryers or should I say before hair dryers. This trick just might help you too, to style your hair in a flash and avoid having a bad hair day when you find yourself without your hair dryers.

“When Your
Hair Dryers Fail”
Ok, picture this, my hubby and I started the second leg of a summer vacation this morning. We’ve just spent a week in the Rocky Mountains in Glenwood Springs and Aspen. Beautiful!! Lovely!! So Peaceful!! And now we are going to lollygag our way back to Minnesota. We’ll spend four days on the train taking the long way home, via Sacramento, California, Portland, Oregon, Glacier Park, Montana.

We needed to be at the train station at some un-godly hour this morning, repacked to fit smaller accommodations for the next four days. Although we have a said “shower” in our sleeper car, we’ve learned that a “shower” is a big stretch for a name that accomodation. So basically when leaving our hotel this morning, we needed to be showered up cause and out the door in less than 45min. Blow drying my hair at 4:30 am in the hotel room was something that I knew hubby would not have appreciated.

Long story short, I was scrambling and didn’t finish blow drying my hair by the time we needed to leave for the station. Now I was already committed to the blow-dry look, and couldn’t go to the ‘scrunched” look if you know what I mean. Horrors . . . this was to be my hairstyle for the next four days!

What did I do?  The cab driver actually helped me out on this one, by not having the air-conditioning on in his cab. As I rolled down the window and the warm air hit me, I had a flashback to the 70’s. We didn’t have hair dryers (blow-dryers) in the 70’s and the hot hairstyle was long smooth, sleek, the Cher hair look!

The only way we wavy haired girls could achieve the smooth look was by rolling our long hair in orange juice cans and sleeping on them overnight! (No wonder I have a bad neck) I’m not sure how we Quinn girls came up with this idea, but I think my sisters and I discovered the first blow-dry hairstyle (without hair dryers.).

We learned the quickest, easiest way to get our wavy frizzy hair, smooth and straight was to blow dry it out the window of the car! It worked like a champ! Dry in less than five minutes flat and it was smoother and shinier than we were ever able to achieve before. The only styling involved was to look to the back of the car as you moved and brush your hair vigorously through your hair as it dried, stretching it straight!

Next time you find yourself without hair dryers, try this trick . . . it works!! It gets shiny because it’s drying quick and fast in cooler air than hair dryers allow for . . . even with the cool shot!

Frizzy Hair Fixes

Frizzy Hair
Frizzy Hair Fix: Are You in Need of One?

We have all needed a good hair fix for frizzy hair at one time or another. Frizzy hair can creep up on us out of nowhere sometimes . . . especially in summer, so here are some ideas for a frizzy hair fix if you come down with a case of the ‘frizzies’.

Hair Fix for Summer Frizzies

Summer frizz is usually caused by damaged hair along with the hot, dry weather that comes along with summer. Frizzy hair is the result of dried out strands. So what is the hair fix for summer frizz? Moisture, moisture, moisture! By using a deep conditioner weekly, you can help prevent dried out frizzy hair.

One deep conditioner I really like is Enjoy Hair Mask, because it leaves your hair feeling silky smoothed and super moisturized. Another good practice is to rinse your hair with water and apply a conditioner before you get into the pool (or ocean). The conditioner will act as a barrier to any chemicals from the pool or harsh salt water from the ocean and give you ultra moisturized locks at the end of the day.

Hair Fix When Humidity Runs High

Frizzy Hair
A shine serum is a great fix for frizzy hair!

Humid weather, like the kind you can find in Florida, is also a big cause for frizzy hair. A shine serum is a great hair fix for humidity. Shine serum tend to not only be good shine enhancers, but great frizz fighters too. To fight frizzy hair in humid weather, try blow drying hair until it is completely dry and then using a shine serum to finish your style. Silicone, which is a key ingredient in shine serum, helps to combat humidity and fight frizz. Try a shine serum like Kenra Platinum Silkening Gloss, that has silicone in it. I use this one all the time before and after styling to keep my strands frizz free.

Hair Fix for Flyaway Hair

Frizzy Hair
Dryer sheets are a quick and easy hair fix for flyaway hair!

Maybe you don’t have a problem with the frizzy hair as much as you do with flyaway hair. If this is the case, your hair fix may be sitting on a shelf in your laundry room now. Next time you find your hair full of static and uncontrollable, reach for a dryer sheet to help combat your problem. You can run a dryer sheet over your brush, comb or even over your strands for a quick hair fix for flyaway hair. When flyaways are the problem, you can keep a dryer sheet in your purse for a quick hair fix . . . and as an extra bonus; you will smell as fresh as clean linens!

Frizzy hair can be combated with one or all of these hair fix suggestions. If need be you can carry a ‘hair fix kit’ in your purse. Your ‘hair fix kit’ can include a travel sized shine serum, dryer sheet or maybe even a hair band for those ‘can’t be fixed’ hair days. Hopefully these hair fix helpers can get rid of the frizzy hair for you once and for all!
