Retro Hair Styles

High School Yearbooks Are a Great Source For Ideas on Vintage Hair Styles

Next time you visit grandma, ask her if she still has her high school yearbook. You will at the very least have lots of fun seeing some great vintage retro hair styles, and who knows maybe you find a retro hair style that is a real knockout and just right for you.

“we have lost a lot of creativity from those days of retro hair styles”

On a recent family get together I noticed a high school yearbook on the book shelf at the home of a relative. It was from the graduating class of 1936. What a treat, the females at the outing all gathered around and we had great fun looking at vintage hair styles. Somebody made the comment about how we have lost a lot of creativity from those days of spit curls. If you visit a high school today, you’re likely to see about 85% of the hairstyles being long and straight.

The other observation we made was that many of those girls from the yearbook were wearing a hairstyle that would be a knock-out today. Finger waves for an example, they are hot in Hollywood. The celebrity hairdressers are getting some big fees, for a very simple procedure.

One of my custom virtual hair style makeover clients on a recent counseling call asked about the finger wave, I told her with a little practice she could create this look at home. There are plenty of sites on the Internet that can show you how, but my favorite is reVamp which gives simple step by step directions.

Gadget Will Help You Avoid Chlorine Hair

Any of you who have had an athlete in the family who spent time in a swimming pool knows how damaging chlorine hair can be. It goes well beyond just the yucky green hair look. Even a little can break down the natural oils in your hair and leave without any sheen and dull and lifeless.

“a shower head attachment helps chlorine hair”

This chemical is really a mild form of bleach. Some municipal water systems contain enough concentrations of chlorine to damage your hair. There are shampoo and conditioning products that are specially formulated for chlorine hair.

But if you’re in one of those localities, you’re going to love this product. Here now comes a shower head attachment that will filter out harmful chlorine levels.

I just love these kinds of products.

Personal Wellness Company Launches All New Dechlorinating Shower Filter

This shower product is useful for everyone concerned about heavily chlorinated municipal water which has been known to leave your skin and chlorine hair looking and feeling dull and lifeless,” said Lacy. “Unlike standard shower filters, the Vitashower VS-1 relies solely on powerful antioxidants to rejuvenate your skin and chlorine hair by completely neutralizing the disinfectants found in public water supplies. Ultimately, we believe that health conscious consumers will realize the benefit of keeping dangerous chlorinated water and vapors from being absorbed into their bodies through their skin or inhaled directly into the lungs while showering.

Men Hair Style Trends

Men Hair Style Trend

Men’s Hair Style Trend . . . The Goatee!

Here’s an interesting beard site with lots to see. The hottest new men’s style trend . . . is the goatee! (And women, if your guy needs an update . . . give him a nudge in this direction.)

If you’ve been considering a style change and haven’t known what to do, lucky you, this is the quick fix you’ve been waiting for. Grow a goatee, it’s easy and if you don’t like it . . . cut it off. The beauty of facial hair is that it grows back quickly, so if you don’t like a change you’ve made it can be fixed within days.

Good maintenance and a nicely shaped beard for your face shape, is the key to making a beard work for you. If you’re going to wear a beard, it’s well worth your money to invest in a good clipper to keep it looking nice. You can trim your beard with a comb and a good shear, but it takes more time and skill to get it evenly groomed that way. A good clipper is worth the investment.

What should you take into consideration when buying a clipper?

  • Get one with the blade attachment’s to allow for trimming different lengths to your beard.

  • Look for these attachments: 1/8th”, 1/4th”, 3/8th, 1/2” to be with the clippers you buy.

  • Stick with name brands like, Andis, Wahl or Oster.

A clipper is different from a trimmer. A trimmer is used to cut close, clean lines only as in side burns, hair lines ear hair and nose hair and they don’t allow for adjustment with blade attachments. Where as a clipper can be used for haircuts and beard trims of different lengths with appropriate blade attachments. Thicker facial hair can go longer between clippings than thinner hair.

The goatee requires a little more upkeep. You will still need to shave as well as keep the goatee groomed.

The look of the original goatee, long and pointy, is not the look you’re going for today . . . thank you lord. Instead, keep it closely clipped for a neat look.

Here’s how to achieve the goatee look; Grow in hair for about a week so you have enough to see the outline you will need to define. The best time to shave is after a shower. The hot steam will open up your pores and softens your beard to give you a cleaner, easier shave. You’ll also prevent nicks and cuts by shaving this way. You will need to see where to cut, so first cut in the outline with your razor, without using shaving cream. Now lather and shave cutting out the rest of unwanted hair.

You could also have your hairdresser cut it in to begin with. Just go in with enough growth so your hairdresser can etch in the shape. And if you’ve had a beard for so long that you’re skittish about cutting it off . . . go slow and start with small changes.

And if you’re looking for a reason to experiment with a beard or mustache join the Movember movement and help out men’s health causes at the same time.
