‘Cosmetics cop’ Paula Begoun picks the best hair care products of 2005

A book in my library that I would grab on my way out of my burning house is written by Paula Begoun who is the author of Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Counter Without Me . She’s also the company founder of “Paula’s Choice” skin-care products. Write to her at 1030 SW 34th St., Suite A, Renton, WA 98055, or visit her Web site: www.cosmeticscop.com. She knows her stuff . . . she wrote this article for the Dallas Morning News:

New Year’s is a time for well-meaning resolutions for self-improvement, but it is also the time for a year in review. So as hundreds of new hair care products are about to be introduced, I want to revisit some of the more impressive products that were launched in 2005. All the products that make my list exemplify the amazing strides the field of cosmetics chemistry continues to make.

Among the top choices on my list are foundations, concealers and powders that are setting new standards of excellence. Also on my list Some hair care products are a cut above the restare state-of-the-art moisturizers (lotions, creams and serums) that allow skin to behave in a healthier manner, sunscreens with elegant and silky aesthetics that encourage daily compliance, and anti-blemish products that contain effective ingredients and have a genuine chance of working (rather than making matters worse). Finally, some hair care products are a cut above the rest – these are beauty breakthroughs everyone should know about.

This list is about great formulations and, in the case of makeup products, impressive performance. But, an item’s inclusion does not mean that I found even a fraction of these companies’ claims about their products true or how they marketed the products the least bit valid.

Hair accessories-scarves, barrettes and other hair thingies

Hair Sticks
Hair Accessories . . . A quick, no fuss hairstyle change

The last time you wanted a hair style change did you consider all the possibilities you have of changing it with . . . hair accessories?

I used to be more adventuresome in the art of using hair accessories to change the look of my hairstyle. I don’t nearly use as many hair accessories now, than I did back when…why is that? My hair was longer for one, (no excuse) and I was in the mind-set of offering clients suggestions on how-to change their hair style. In looking back on it, I miss the fun I had in changing my hair style in an instant.

Of course, we hairdressers relied on each other for the honesty factor, to alert us if we went over-the-top with our creative ambition. (A good idea to have a trusted friend when you start wondering if you’ve gone too far.) It’s hard to be objective about yourself.

Do you realize all the different hair accessories we actually have? I bet it would surprise you . . . barrettes, clips, hat’s, (my fave these days) scarves, hair add-on’s, combs, hair sticks, pins, scrunchies, jaw clips, wraps, headbands and I’m sure I’m forgetting some.

Anyway, I’m challenging you to find at least three new hair accessories, this year, you can use to change your look on a whim . . . when you just want to kick things up a notch or just need a change to make things more interesting! (If you can’t come up with just what that would be……ask your hairdresser to throw in some creative possibilities!)

Here are a few links to get you started:

Rhinestone barrettes -

Glamour Goddess Jewelry- Best prices around for gorgeous barrettes!

Longlocks Hairsticks – http://www.longlocks.com/catalog.htm Pricey but . . . sooooo pretty! For weddings, proms whatever, they give some instruction in “how -to’s” when Rapunzel wants to put all that hair up!

A variety of hair accessories – http://www.folica.com/Accessorie_127_1.html If you have been following my series on “essential tools” you know how I feel about this site. They have some variety with their hair accessories, but are rated higher in my book for hair styling tools.

A fun way to go – http://search.ebay.com/search/hair-accessories_W0QQfclZ4QQfnuZ1QQ Something for everyone…..egads! I love the hats!

Coloring your hair? What about eyebrow coloring?

Jennifer Anniston with shorter hair

Eyebrow Tinting, In comment #31 of my Chart of Haircolors article, Hannah asks this great question:

I have really dark brown eyebrows but would really like to dye my hair blonde. would it look odd? and could i pluck my eyebrows in a certain way to make it look a little more natural with the blonde (would they have to be thinner?) please email me and let me know what you think. thanks ~ Hannah ps: what shade of blonde would go best with my eyebrow coloring? it’s really worrying me as i don’t want to end up looking fake, or awful. ,,

My answer Hanna, is simple — Don’t do eyebrow tinting! It’s a messy procedure and requires a gentle touch to keep you from looking like Groucho Marks’ sister! Take a look at Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey, Keira Knightley, they all have eyebrow coloring darker than their hairA better way to go is to have high lights foiled into your brown hair. Foiling a couple or more colors, one or two shades lighter than your natural hair coloring, into your hair will not only create depth and interest, but will be easier to maintain. It will look more natural and you should be able to easily go a couple months between hair coloring jobs. Now, the eyebrow coloring will look natural.

Take a look at Jennifer Aniston, Jessica Simpson, Mariah Carey, Keira Knightley, they all have darker eyebrow coloring than their lightened hair. Most natural blondes eyebrow coloring are a shade or two darker than their hair. When the eyebrow coloring is too light, they need to use the lightest brown eyeshadow to accent their eyebrow coloring and frame their eyes! (The same goes for you women who are struggling with gray eyebrows you would like to look darker – blend light brown or gray eye shadows. You may be able to use eyebrow pencils, but use lightly.)

So, my opinion is Don’t color your hair totally blonde, nor your eyebrows, if you don’t want to end up looking fake! Rather, book a consultation with a hair colorist and get it right. Bring in pictures of high lighted hair you admire so you are both on the same page. If cost is a problem, go to a local, reputable cosmetology school. I’ve had many women in my classes that have been happy with results at the schools.
